Changing Gears In The Sugar Industry

David Brown’s extensive knowledge and experience within the sugar industry make them a brand to be reckoned with, and a first choice amongst leading sugar companies in Africa.

For over 60 years, David Brown Gear Industries’ affiliation with the sugar industry has enabled the smooth running of Africa’s top sugar mills increasing productivity and service delivery by assisting in the design, manufacture and servicing of customised gears and gearboxes. This, along with David Brown’s new Level 6 value-adding supplier BBBEE accreditation, and the recent opening of their in-house service and repair centre has once again established why David Brown is a front runner in the supply and service of gears to the sugar industry.

David Brown’s agent, Sugartech Gear Services cc, has successfully expanded David Brown’s commitment to this industry by sealing a contract with new industry player, Emineo Limited, based in Mauritius. Emineo Limited has recently ordered a size SPS63 Cane Knife Gearbox to the value of R160 000 for the Maragra Sugar Mill upgrade in Mozambique with good prospects of further orders for other applications. Other major companies on David Brown’s books include Tongaat-Hulett Sugar, Gledhow Sugar Company, Royal Swaziland Sugar Corp Ltd, Illovo Sugar Limited, Umfolozi Sugar (Pty) Ltd and T.S.B. Malalane.

In August 2009 David Brown launched its new R12 million in-house service and repair centre, making them the only company in South Africa able to service conveyor drive gearboxes and large gearboxes up to 14m in diameter. David Brown’s service centre is manned by a dedicated team of professionals and their workshops are equipped with the right machines required to function efficiently as a stand alone company. This investment is aimed at improving service delivery to David Brown customers.

Steve Slater, of Sugartech, says that David Brown Gear Industries stand out from their competitors by virtue of the fact that they offer a unique gear inspection service to each customer. “We inspect all our customer’s main mill drive gearing and submit a written report along with any remedial actions that may be required” Slater explains.

Slater says a number of imminent prospects are in the cards, particularly with regard to upgrading projects at Illovo Dwangwa and Nchalo Mills in Malawi and the Ubombo Sugar Mill in Swaziland.

David Brown was awarded a value-adding supplier Level 6 BBBEE status in May 2009. This status paves the way for David Brown to conduct meaningful business in the sugar industry whilst supporting government initiatives and providing it’s staff with skills development and training programmes. Being a value-adding supplier means that companies that conduct business with David Brown are able to multiply their procurement recognition level by up to 125%.

David Brown’s extensive experience in the sugar industry showcases their superior skills and knowledge of the various applications required, as well as their solid commitment and passion for customer satisfaction. David Brown provide their clients with an energy and reliability in every application they fulfil from start to finish, and thereafter.
